Google Business Profile suspended: what to do

A suspended Google Business Profile can feel like your business vanished overnight — because on Google Maps, it did. The good news: suspensions are often reversible if you handle them calmly and correctly. The bad news: the wrong first move can make reinstatement much harder. Here's the plan.
Soft suspension vs. hard suspension
A soft suspension means your profile is still visible but you've lost the ability to manage it. A hard suspension means the listing is removed from Google Maps entirely. Hard suspensions are more serious and usually point to a guideline violation.
Common reasons profiles get suspended
- Keyword-stuffed business name (adding services or cities to the name).
- A mismatch between your address and the kind of business (e.g., a service-area business showing a street address it shouldn't).
- Frequent, large edits to core info in a short window.
- Virtual offices, PO boxes, or an address you can't prove you occupy.
- Prohibited business categories or policy violations.
Do NOT create a new profile
The most common mistake is spinning up a fresh listing to get back online fast. That creates a duplicate, muddies your history, and can jeopardize reinstatement of the original. Fix the real profile instead.
Step 1: Identify the likely cause
Review your name, address, categories, and recent edit history against Google's guidelines. Be honest — the fastest reinstatements come from correctly diagnosing the actual violation rather than guessing.
Step 2: Fix the violation first
Correct whatever broke the rules before you appeal. Remove keywords from the business name, fix the address setup, and revert any risky recent changes. Reinstatement reviews look at the profile as it stands when you appeal.
Step 3: File for reinstatement with evidence
Use Google's reinstatement form and include proof you're a real, eligible business at that location — think signage, licensing, utility bills, or similar documentation. Clear evidence dramatically improves your odds.
Step 4: If denied, appeal calmly
Denials happen, sometimes in error. You can appeal. Keep your tone factual, address the stated reason directly, and add any documentation you didn't include the first time.
How to avoid it happening again
Most suspensions trace back to guideline drift — a name tweak here, an address change there. Keep your profile clean and compliant, avoid dramatic edits, and monitor for unexpected changes. If a suspension is costing you jobs right now, our Google Business Profile management service can help diagnose the cause and manage the reinstatement.
Note: a profile that merely dropped in the rankings isn't suspended — that's a different problem with different fixes. See why your ranking dropped.
