The Google Business Profile optimization checklist

Hands fine-tuning a blue map pin with a precision screwdriver on a workbench

Most Google Business Profiles leave rankings on the table simply because fields are blank, wrong, or inconsistent. This is the checklist we work through when we optimize a profile. Run your own listing against it top to bottom.

Core identity

  • Business name — your real-world name, no added keywords or city names. Keyword stuffing the name violates Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
  • Primary category — the single most accurate category for your core service. This is one of your biggest ranking levers.
  • Secondary categories — add one for each additional service you genuinely offer; don't pad with services you don't.

Contact and location

  • NAP — Name, Address, and Phone must match exactly everywhere online.
  • Service area — for mobile businesses, list the areas you truly serve rather than every nearby town.
  • Hours — accurate regular and holiday hours; "open now" affects both ranking and clicks.

Services and description

  • Services — add every service with clear names and short descriptions. This feeds relevance directly.
  • Business description — a clear, honest summary of what you do and where. Lead with what matters, not marketing fluff.
  • Attributes — fill in every relevant attribute (identifies-as, amenities, service options); they can trigger extra visibility.

Media

  • Logo and cover photo — on-brand and high quality.
  • Photos — real images of your team, work, and location, added regularly, not once.
  • Videos — short clips of jobs or your shop when you have them.

Reviews

  • A steady flow — make leaving a review effortless with tap-to-review cards and tags; ask every satisfied customer.
  • Responses — reply to reviews, positive and negative; it signals an active, engaged business.
  • No shortcuts — never buy reviews, write fake ones, or gate them. It risks suspension.

Ongoing activity

  • Google Posts — regular updates, offers, and seasonal reminders. See whether Google Posts help ranking.
  • Q&A — seed and answer common questions; monitor for new ones.
  • Products and services updates — keep them current as your offerings change.

Measurement

  • Grid rank tracking — check your position across your whole service area monthly, not from a single spot.
  • Insights — watch calls, direction requests, and searches to see what's working.

Working through this once makes a real difference; keeping it current is what holds rankings over time. If you'd rather it simply be handled, that's exactly what our Google Business Profile management service does. For the theory behind the checklist, read how to rank higher on Google Maps.
